Fresh-Cut Flower Arranging Tips to Design Like a Pro

1. Start with a Vision

Before arranging fresh flowers, visualize the design you want to create. Consider the color palette, theme, and style, such as rustic, modern, or romantic, to ensure a cohesive and stunning arrangement.

2. Choose a Focal Point

Select a standout bloom to serve as the centerpiece of your arrangement. This could be a single rose in your favorite custom color or a cluster of unique blooms to draw attention.

3. Vary Heights and Textures

Combine flowers of different heights and textures to add depth and interest to your arrangement. Use shorter flowers or greenery near the edges to create balance.

4. Work in Layers

Start with greenery as the base and layer in flowers from largest to smallest. This technique creates a lush, professional look and ensures every bloom is beautifully displayed.

5. Stick to an Odd Number of Blooms

When grouping flowers, use odd numbers for a more natural and visually appealing arrangement. For instance, three or five custom-colored roses add charm to any bouquet.

6. Add Greenery for Contrast

Integrate greenery or foliage to provide contrast and highlight vibrant blooms. Select greens that complement the colors of your chosen flowers while adding texture to the arrangement.

7. Maintain a Loose and Natural Style

Avoid overly tight or symmetrical arrangements. Allow flowers to flow naturally, mimicking how they grow, for an organic and pro-level design.

8. Keep Proportion in Mind

Ensure that the size of your arrangement complements the vase or container you’re using. Aim for a ratio where the flowers are about one and a half times taller than the vessel.

9. Refresh and Experiment Often

Switch out colors and styles to experiment with different designs. Custom-colored fresh-cut flowers open endless possibilities for creating floral masterpieces that inspire and delight.

Care

Care and Handling for Fresh Cut Roses

1. Proper Hydration

Freshly cut roses need adequate hydration to maintain their beauty. Immediately trim the stems at a 45-degree angle with a sharp, clean knife or scissors to maximize water absorption. Place the roses in a clean vase filled with fresh, room-temperature water to keep them hydrated.

2. Remove Foliage Below Waterline

To prevent bacterial growth, strip any leaves or foliage that may sit below the waterline in the vase. This step helps to maintain the cleanliness of the water and extends the roses’ lifespan.

3. Use Flower Food

Add flower food to the water as it contains essential nutrients that keep your roses fresh longer. The food also helps to maintain the vibrancy of the petals and inhibits bacterial growth.

4. Change Water Regularly

Replace the water in the vase every two to three days. When changing the water, clean the vase thoroughly to remove any residue and re-trim the rose stems slightly to ensure they absorb water efficiently.

5. Keep Roses Away from Heat

Display your roses in a cool area away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or other sources of warmth. Heat can cause the blooms to wilt prematurely, reducing their lifespan.

6. Avoid Drafts and Fruits

Place your roses in a location free from drafts or breeze, as this can dry out the petals. Additionally, avoid setting roses near fruits, as ripening fruits release ethylene gas, which accelerates the aging process of flowers.

7. Revive Wilted Roses

If roses start to wilt, submerge the entire rose, including the bloom, in a basin of cool water for about 30 minutes. This rehydrates the flower, restoring its vitality and keeping it fresh.

8. Monitor for Signs of Decay

Regularly inspect the roses for any wilting petals or leaves. Remove these to ensure the rest of the bouquet remains healthy and visually appealing. Prompt care in addressing these signs can extend the beauty of your arrangement.

What our customers say...

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
