Flower Arranging Tips to Design Like a Pro

1. Understand the Role of Floral Tape

Using floral tape can provide structure and stability to your arrangement, especially when working with complicated designs or delicate blooms. A grid created with floral tape on the vase opening ensures that each stem stays in place while adding precision to your design.

2. Hydrate Your Flowers Properly

Ensure your fresh-cut flowers are fully hydrated before arranging them. Place them in cool water for a few hours after trimming their stems. This process maximizes their longevity and keeps them looking vibrant and beautiful.

3. Trim Stems at an Angle

Always trim flower stems at a 45-degree angle before placing them in water. This technique increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents stems from sitting flat against the vase base, allowing for better hydration.

4. Use Floral Foam for Structured Arrangements

Floral foam can be a game-changer for intricate designs. It holds stems securely in place and ensures they stay hydrated for extended periods, making it ideal for larger or more elaborate centerpieces.

5. Reuse and Repurpose Blooms

When your arrangement starts to fade, don’t throw away the remaining fresh blooms. Repurpose remaining flowers into smaller bouquets, decorate gift wrappings, or press them for keepsakes. This approach reduces waste and extends their usefulness.

6. Experiment with Unique Containers

Think beyond traditional vases. Mason jars, teapots, or vintage pitchers can add personality and charm to your arrangement. Unique containers often enhance the overall aesthetic and make your design stand out.

7. Incorporate Seasonal Elements

Use seasonal blooms and foliage to add a touch of timeliness to your creation. Incorporating elements like pinecones in winter or sunflowers in summer brings a fresh, seasonal vibe to your designs.

8. Pay Attention to Lighting

Once your arrangement is complete, display it in a spot with appropriate lighting to enhance its beauty. Soft natural light can make the colors pop, while dark areas may diminish its visual impact. Select a well-lit area for a stunning display.

Care

Care and Handling for Fresh Cut Roses

 Hydrate Immediately

Trim the stems of your roses at an angle upon arrival and place them in a clean container with fresh water. This step ensures the flowers begin to absorb water efficiently and prevents dehydration.

Strip Lower Leaves

Remove any leaves that would otherwise sit in the water. This will help to minimize bacteria buildup and keep your roses fresh for longer.

Add a Floral Preservative

Mix a packet of floral food into the water to provide your roses with essential nutrients, keeping the blooms vibrant and extending their lifespan.

Replace Water Frequently

Every couple of days, switch out the water in the vase. Before refilling, rinse the vase thoroughly to clear out any bacteria, and give the stems a light trim.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Set your roses in a spot where they won’t be exposed to hot sunlight or heat sources. These conditions can expedite wilting and reduce the bloom’s natural longevity.

Steer Clear of Fruits

Keep roses away from ripening fruits, which emit ethylene gas. This gas speeds up the aging process of the flowers.

Refresh Drooping Roses

If any blooms begin to droop, immerse the entire rose in cool water for about 30 to 60 minutes to revive it.

Check for Petal Health

Inspect the petals and leaves regularly, and gently remove any that start to fade or show signs of decay to preserve the appearance of your bouquet.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
