Tips to Decorate with Petals

Uses for Fresh Rose Petals

Fresh rose petals are not only a beautiful addition to celebrations but also offer versatile uses to enhance the ambiance and experience of your event. They can be used as natural table decorations, scattered across a reception table or around centerpiece arrangements for added charm. For weddings, rose petals are often sprinkled along the aisle to create a romantic pathway or handed out to guests for a stunning petal toss as the newlyweds make their grand exit. Incorporating petals into DIY projects such as scented sachets or floating them in water-filled bowls with candles can make the atmosphere even more enchanting. With creativity and care, fresh rose petals can elevate any occasion with their elegance and fragrant allure.

Care & Handling

Care and Handling Instructions for Fresh Rose Petals

1. General Storage Guidelines

To keep your fresh rose petals in their best condition before an event, store them in a cool and dry environment. Refrigerators set between 37°F and 39°F (3°C to 4°C) are ideal, as this temperature mimics the perfect level of coolness to preserve their delicate structure. Ensure the petals are placed in a breathable container, such as a paper bag or a perforated plastic bag, to maintain airflow and avoid condensation, which can lead to mildew or spoilage.

2. Avoid Direct Sunlight

Fresh rose petals are sensitive to heat and light, which can cause discoloration or drying. Keep them away from direct sunlight and other heat-emitting sources like heaters or stovetops. If displaying the petals outdoors, ensure they are placed in shaded areas to preserve their vibrancy throughout the event.

3. Handle with Care

Fresh rose petals are delicate and prone to damage from rough handling. Always wash and dry your hands before touching them to avoid transferring oils or dirt. For large quantities, use a soft scoop to minimize unnecessary contact. This gentle handling ensures that the petals remain flawless for your special occasion.

4. Hydration Techniques

While rose petals do not require water to stay fresh, maintaining some humidity in their storage environment can help prevent them from drying out. Placing a slightly damp paper towel inside the storage container can create the optimal level of moisture to keep them supple without overhydration, which could cause rotting.

5. Transportation Tips

When transporting rose petals to the celebration venue, use sturdy, breathable containers such as baskets or boxes lined with tissue paper. Secure the containers to avoid any shifting or crushing of the petals during transit. Once onsite, store the petals in a cool area until you’re ready to arrange them.

6. Timing is Key

Arrange the petals as close to the event time as possible to preserve their natural charm and vibrancy. Fresh petals are highly perishable, so preparing and scattering them prematurely may cause them to lose their pristine look. Timing your setup strategically ensures they remain beautiful throughout the celebration.

7. Clean-Up Considerations

After the event, fresh rose petals should be disposed of responsibly. Since they are biodegradable, they can often be composted or allowed to naturally decompose. For venues with cleanup restrictions, double-check their guidelines to ensure proper disposal methods are followed.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
