Designing Tips

Designing Tips Using Regular Magnolia Leaves

1. Use as a Luxe Greenery Base

Magnolia leaves are ideal as a foundation greenery thanks to their thick texture and rich green tops. Lay them first, then build florals on top for a full, elegant look.

Best for:

  • Wedding centerpieces
  • Ceremony urns
  • Floral installations

2. Flip for Contrast (Green + Brown Tone)

The deep green front and velvety brown underside create instant contrast. Slightly turn or layer leaves to show both sides for a warm, upscale feel.

Perfect for:

  • Fall and winter weddings
  • Neutral, boho, rustic, and luxury palettes

3. Ideal for Garlands & Tablescapes

Magnolia leaves hold their shape well, making them excellent for:

  • Long head table garlands
  • Sweetheart tables
  • Mantel or staircase décor

Pair with candles for a romantic, timeless look.

4. Pair with Soft & Romantic Flowers

Magnolia leaves balance beautifully with softer blooms such as:

  • Roses
  • Ranunculus
  • Peonies
  • Garden roses

This contrast adds depth without overpowering delicate florals.

5. Statement Greenery for Large Installations

Use magnolia leaves in arches, backdrops, and aisle décor where structure matters. Their sturdy stems and broad leaves keep designs looking polished longer.

6. Perfect for Minimalist & Greenery-Only Designs

For couples wanting a clean, modern look, magnolia leaves can stand alone with:

  • Eucalyptus accents
  • Olive branches
  • Simple white florals

This keeps designs fresh and refined.

7. Excellent for Seasonal Weddings

Magnolia leaves shine in:

  • Fall weddings (warm undertones)
  • Winter weddings (evergreen look)
  • Southern-style celebrations

They photograph beautifully in all lighting conditions.

8. Use in Bouquets as a Framing Element

Add magnolia leaves around the edges of bridal or bridesmaid bouquets to:

  • Frame focal flowers
  • Add fullness
  • Create a natural, garden-style shape

Designer Tip

Because magnolia leaves are thicker than most greenery, use fewer stems than eucalyptus or ruscus for a cleaner, more intentional design.

FAQ & Care

What are Regular Magnolia Leaves?

Regular Magnolia Leaves are broad, glossy greenery with deep green tops and a soft, velvety brown underside. They are commonly used in weddings and events for their rich texture, durability, and elegant, timeless look.

Are magnolia leaves suitable for weddings and events?

Yes. Magnolia leaves are a popular choice for weddings, corporate events, and styled shoots because they hold their shape well, photograph beautifully, and complement both classic and modern floral designs.

What floral styles do magnolia leaves work best with?

Magnolia leaves work beautifully with:

  • Romantic and garden-style arrangements
  • Modern greenery-forward designs
  • Rustic, boho, and Southern-inspired weddings
  • Minimalist floral décor

They pair especially well with roses, peonies, ranunculus, hydrangeas, and eucalyptus.

Can magnolia leaves be used year-round?

Yes. Magnolia leaves are available year-round and are especially popular for fall and winter weddings due to their warm undertones, but they also work beautifully in spring and summer designs.

How many magnolia leaves do I need for my event?

The number needed depends on how they’re used:

  • Centerpieces: 4–8 leaves per arrangement
  • Garlands & tablescapes: 10–15 leaves per foot
  • Arches & installations: Use as a base greenery, then layer florals

A florist or designer can help determine exact quantities.

Do magnolia leaves have a scent?

Magnolia leaves are not strongly scented, making them ideal for events where fragrance sensitivity is a concern.

How long do magnolia leaves last once arranged?

When properly hydrated and stored, magnolia leaves can last 7–14 days, making them excellent for multi-day events and early preparation.

How should magnolia leaves be cared for and handled?

Upon arrival:

  1. Trim the stems slightly at an angle.
  2. Place in clean, cool water immediately.
  3. Store in a cool area away from direct sunlight and heat.
  4. Lightly mist the leaves if storing out of water for short periods.

Avoid excessive handling of the brown underside to preserve its velvety texture.

Can magnolia leaves be used out of water?

Yes. Magnolia leaves are sturdy and can be used dry for short periods in installations, garlands, or décor, though hydration will extend their freshness and color.

Are magnolia leaves safe for indoor events?

Yes. They are non-toxic, long-lasting, and commonly used in indoor venues, homes, churches, and event spaces.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
