Designing Tips

Designing Tips for Dark Red & Burgundy Sweet Peas

1. Highlight the Drama

Dark red and burgundy sweet peas add depth and romance to floral arrangements.

  • Color Pairings: Pair with blush roses, champagne ranunculus, or quicksand roses for a soft contrast.
  • Moody Palettes: Combine with deep plum dahlias, black scabiosa, or burgundy ranunculus for rich, dramatic looks.

2. Bouquet Inspiration

  • Bridal Bouquets: Use burgundy sweet peas as accents for a sultry, sophisticated bouquet.
  • Monochrome Statement: Build an all-red bouquet with roses, ranunculus, and burgundy sweet peas for a bold, cohesive look.
  • Texture Tip: Mix with airy filler flowers like astilbe or queen anne’s lace to soften heavy color blocks.

3. Centerpieces & Table Décor

  • Romantic Tablescapes: Arrange with blush and ivory blooms for a classic, timeless feel.
  • Moody Dinner Parties: Pair with candles, black vases, and dark greenery for intimate evening events.
  • Long Tables: Scatter burgundy sweet peas in bud vases down farm tables for a minimal, organic look.

4. Ceremony Installations

  • Arches & Backdrops: Use them to bring depth to greenery garlands and focal ceremony arches.
  • Aisle Décor: Create posies or clusters tied to chairs with deep red or black silk ribbon.

5. Seasonal Styling

  • Fall & Winter: Burgundy sweet peas are perfect for harvest, holiday, or New Year’s weddings.
  • Valentine’s Day Events: Combine with red roses for a romantic, luxurious look.

6. Design Tips for Bulk Orders

  • Sort Stems: Reserve the longest stems for statement pieces and use shorter ones in boutonnieres or bud vases.
  • Hydrate Early: Deep-colored petals can wilt quickly if not conditioned properly — hydrate as soon as they arrive.
  • Distribute Evenly: Use throughout arrangements to tie the event color story together.

Care & Handling

Care & Handling Guide for Dark Red & Burgundy Sweet Peas

1. Unpack Immediately

  • Open the box as soon as it arrives.
  • Gently remove bunches — dark-colored sweet peas can bruise easily and show marks more visibly.
  • Keep stems upright during unpacking to prevent bending or snapping.

2. Hydrate & Condition

  • Trim Stems: Cut about ½ inch off the bottom at a diagonal under cool running water.
  • Clean Containers: Use sanitized buckets filled with fresh, cool water.
  • Conditioning Time: Allow 4–6 hours for full hydration before arranging — this helps maintain rich color and petal structure.

3. Storage Guidelines

  • Temperature: Keep flowers at 36–41°F (2–5°C) in a cooler or cool room.
  • Avoid Heat & Direct Light: Excess warmth can cause premature wilting and color fading.
  • Ethylene Sensitive: Keep away from ripening fruit and vegetables.

4. Daily Maintenance

  • Replace water every 24 hours to prevent bacteria buildup.
  • Recut stems daily for maximum water uptake.
  • Remove any wilted or damaged blooms to keep arrangements clean and fresh.

5. Design & Event Tips

  • Keep stems in water until just before designing.
  • Handle carefully — dark red and burgundy petals can show fingerprints or damage more easily.
  • For outdoor events, keep completed arrangements shaded until installation to avoid fading in direct sunlight.
  • For best results, design 1–2 days before the event so flowers are at peak bloom.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
