Designing Tips

Designing Tips for Mixed Peonies – from Whole Blossoms

Mixed peonies offer a luxurious blend of soft blush, vibrant coral, deep magenta, and creamy whites, making them ideal focal flowers in any arrangement. At Whole Blossoms, we recommend using mixed peonies when you want to achieve a lush, romantic, and garden-inspired look with natural texture and color variation.

  • Focal Feature: Use peonies as the main bloom in bridal bouquets, centerpieces, or floral arches. Their large, ruffled petals provide instant impact and elegance.
  • Color Harmony: Pair peonies by tone—e.g., blend blush and ivory with dusty pinks for soft romantic palettes, or mix coral and deep magenta for bold, vibrant looks.
  • Supportive Greens: Use soft greenery like Italian ruscus, seeded eucalyptus, or dusty miller to enhance the peonies’ natural form without overpowering them.
  • Layered Designs: Combine with roses, ranunculus, lisianthus, or hydrangeas for volume and varied texture. Baby’s breath or astilbe add ethereal softness.
  • Staging Tip: Allow some peonies to be fully open and others to remain partially closed for a more natural and dynamic composition.
  • Event Decor: Ideal for floral installations, ceremony backdrops, stairway garlands, and cake table arrangements—especially when mixing peony colors for visual depth.

Care & Handling

Care & Handling for Mixed Peonies – from Whole Blossoms

Proper care is essential to ensure your mixed peonies bloom beautifully and last for your event:

Upon Arrival:

  • Unpack Immediately: Remove peonies from their box and sleeve. Handle gently, as the buds and petals can bruise easily.
  • Trim Stems: Cut 1–2 inches off the stems at a 45° angle under running water to open the vascular system for hydration.
  • Remove Leaves: Strip any leaves that will sit below the water line to prevent bacterial growth.

Hydration:

  • Use Clean Water & Flower Food: Place peonies in a clean vase or bucket with fresh water and floral preservative. Use room temperature water to encourage blooming.
  • Let Them Open Naturally: Peonies may arrive tight in bud form—allow 12–24 hours to hydrate and begin blooming. To speed up blooming, place them in warmer rooms with good light (but no direct sunlight).

Storage:

  • Cool Environment: Store at 40–50°F if not using right away. Do not freeze. Once open, display away from heat sources and drafts.
  • Change Water Daily: Recut stems every 2 days and refresh water to keep them vibrant and extend vase life.
  • Provide Airflow: Avoid crowding blooms to reduce mold or petal damage.
  • Avoid Ethylene Gas: Do not store near fruit, smoke, or engine exhaust which can cause premature wilting.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
