Desiging Tips

Designing Tips for Red Sweet Peas

Domestic Crop • Available March–August

1. Celebrate the Bold Color

Red sweet peas add vibrancy and passion to any floral design.

  • Spring Weddings: Pair with blush, ivory, and dusty pink blooms for a romantic garden look.
  • Summer Events: Mix with bright orange ranunculus, yellow dahlias, or coral roses for cheerful, bold arrangements.

2. Bouquet Inspiration

  • Bridal Bouquets: Use red sweet peas as accent flowers for a pop of color in a mostly neutral bouquet.
  • All-Red Statement: Create a dramatic monochromatic bouquet mixing red roses, peonies, or ranunculus with red sweet peas.
  • Texture Tip: Add greenery like ruscus or olive branches to soften the look and create balance.

3. Centerpieces & Table Styling

  • Romantic Designs: Arrange in gold or glass compote vases with ivory garden roses for a classic look.
  • Rustic Designs: Combine with chamomile, scabiosa pods, or herbs for farm-to-table weddings.
  • Modern Designs: Pair with black vases or matte ceramic containers for contrast and drama.

4. Ceremony Décor

  • Arches & Backdrops: Use red sweet peas as a trailing accent along greenery garlands or to create a color splash in asymmetrical arch designs.
  • Aisle Décor: Small posies tied to chairs with silk ribbon add a romantic touch.

5. Color Palette Ideas

  • Classic Romance: Red + white + lush greenery.
  • Warm Summer: Red + orange + coral + yellow.
  • Bold & Moody: Red + burgundy + deep plum + black accents.

6. Tips for Bulk Use

  • Sort by Stem Length: Use taller stems for arrangements needing height and shorter stems for boutonnieres or bud vases.
  • Batch Processing: Condition all stems at once to save time and ensure even hydration.
  • Design in Cool Spaces: Red sweet peas are sensitive to heat and will last longer if handled in a temperature-controlled environment.

Care & Handling

Care & Handling Guide for Red Sweet Peas

Domestic Crop • Available March–August

1. Unpack Immediately

  • Open the box as soon as it arrives.
  • Gently remove bunches — red sweet peas have delicate, thin petals that can bruise easily.
  • Keep upright during unpacking to avoid stem breakage or bending.

2. Hydrate & Condition

  • Trim Stems: Cut ½ inch from the bottom of each stem at a diagonal under cool running water.
  • Use Clean Buckets: Fill with fresh, cool water and add flower preservative if provided.
  • Conditioning Time: Allow 4–6 hours for flowers to fully hydrate before designing — this ensures vibrant color and upright blooms.

3. Storage Guidelines

  • Temperature: Store in a cooler or cold room at 36–41°F (2–5°C).
  • Keep Away From: Direct sunlight, heat sources, and ripening fruit (ethylene gas shortens vase life).
  • Ventilation: Store in an area with good airflow to prevent mold and bacterial buildup.

4. Daily Maintenance

  • Refresh water daily to prevent bacteria growth.
  • Recut stems every 24 hours to maximize water uptake.
  • Remove any wilted or discolored blooms to keep bunches fresh and appealing.

5. Design & Event Day Tips

  • Keep stems in water until just before arranging.
  • Handle carefully — red petals can show bruising more easily than lighter colors.
  • For outdoor weddings, keep completed arrangements shaded until set up.
  • Design arrangements 1–2 days before the event for peak color and freshness.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
