Care & Handling

Care & Handling Instructions for Bear Grass

To get the best longevity and appearance out of your Bear Grass, follow these professional florist guidelines:

  1. Unpack Immediately: Upon arrival, remove Bear Grass from its box. Cut about ½ inch off the bottom of each stem with a clean, sharp blade or floral scissors.

  2. Hydration: Place stems in clean, room-temperature water in a tall container to allow full submersion of the base. Avoid crowding the stems.

  3. Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Refrigeration at 36–46°F is ideal, but not required for short-term use.

  4. Design Ready: For looping or weaving, hydrate for at least 4 hours prior to use to ensure stems are pliable and won’t snap.

  5. Maintenance: Change the water daily to prevent bacteria buildup. Trim ends every 2–3 days if not used immediately.

  6. Shelf Life: When properly cared for, Bear Grass remains fresh for 10–14 days, making it ideal for both early prep and day-of installations.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
