Arranging Tips

Floral Designer-Level Tips for DIY Brides

  1. Stick to a Color Palette

Choose 2–3 main tones and 1 accent color to create harmony and depth — just like pros do.

  2. Use Focal, Filler & Texture Flowers
    • Focal: Peonies, roses, hydrangeas
    • Filler: Baby’s breath, waxflower, limonium
    • Texture: Eucalyptus, ruscus, fern
  3. Layer Heights and Shapes

Vary stem lengths slightly to build depth and movement. Don’t make everything even — let some blooms float above the rest.

  4. Work in Odd Numbers

Designers often group flowers in 3s or 5s for a natural, balanced look.

  5. Use Floral Tape and Grid Tricks

Use floral tape grids over vases or chicken wire in large arrangements to hold shape and structure.

  6. Hydrate and Prep Stems

Strip lower leaves, re-cut stems at an angle, and hydrate overnight — fresh flowers arrange better and last longer.

  7. Greenery First, Focals Next, Fillers Last

Build the shape with greenery, place your statement flowers, then fill gaps with fillers for a full look.

  8. Step Back and Adjust

Constantly rotate your arrangement and step back to view it from different angles — this is what florists do to balance design.

Care & Handling

Care & Handling for Bowl of Cream Peonies (3–4 Day Opening)

  1. Unpack Carefully

Unbox immediately upon arrival. Remove sleeves and any plastic or paper wrapping to let blooms breathe.

  2. Trim Stems

Cut 1–2 inches off stems at a 45° angle using sharp floral shears to maximize water uptake.

  3. Hydrate in Clean Water

Place stems in cool, clean water with floral preservative. Use tall buckets to support their long stems.

  4. Remove Excess Leaves

Strip any leaves below the waterline to prevent bacteria growth.

  5. Store in a Cool Room (Not a Fridge)

Keep in a cool area (50–65°F) away from direct sunlight or heat. Avoid refrigeration, which can slow blooming too much.

  6. Encourage Opening
    • If blooms are tight after 24–48 hours, move to a warmer room (70°F) for a few hours daily.
    • Gently massage outer petals or place near indirect sunlight to stimulate blooming.
  7. Monitor Water & Clean Daily

Change water daily, recut stems every other day, and keep containers sanitized.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
