Designing Tips

Designing Tips for Red Peonies

High Season: June

1. Highlight Their Drama

Red peonies are bold and lush, making them perfect statement flowers.

  • Classic Romance: Pair with ivory roses, blush ranunculus, and dusty miller for a timeless palette.
  • Moody Elegance: Combine with burgundy dahlias, black scabiosa, or deep plum carnations for rich, dramatic designs.

2. Bouquet Inspiration

  • Bridal Bouquets: Use red peonies as focal flowers surrounded by softer hues for balance.
  • Bridesmaid Bouquets: Design monochromatic red peony posies for a striking, cohesive look.
  • Texture Tip: Layer with lisianthus, astilbe, or eucalyptus to soften the strong color.

3. Centerpieces & Table Styling

  • Romantic Tablescapes: Arrange with gold compotes and ivory blooms for a regal effect.
  • Modern Minimal: Cluster all-red peonies in clear or black vases for a bold, contemporary style.
  • Farm Table Style: Scatter red peonies in bud vases along rustic wooden tables for a natural but elegant look.

4. Ceremony & Installations

  • Arches & Backdrops: Mix red peonies with greenery for a dramatic focal point.
  • Aisle Décor: Tie clusters with silk ribbon in red or burgundy to highlight the ceremony path.
  • Hanging Florals: Red peonies create striking suspended designs for dramatic indoor spaces.

5. Seasonal Styling

  • June Weddings: Feature red peonies at peak bloom in large-scale arrangements to maximize impact.
  • Valentine’s-Inspired Events: Pair with pink and blush blooms for a romantic theme.
  • Summer Celebrations: Mix with coral, yellow, or hot pink flowers for a vibrant seasonal palette.

Care & Handling

Care & Handling Guide for Red Peonies

High Season: June

1. Unpack Immediately

  • Open boxes right after arrival.
  • Remove sleeves gently — red peonies bruise easily and show marks more than lighter colors.
  • Keep stems upright to avoid bending.

2. Hydrate & Condition

  • Trim Stems: Cut ½–1 inch from the bottom at a diagonal under cool, clean running water.
  • Clean Buckets: Place in fresh, cool water with floral preservative.
  • Conditioning Time: Allow 6–12 hours for blooms to fully hydrate before designing.

3. Storage Guidelines

  • Temperature: Store at 36–41°F (2–5°C) in a floral cooler.
  • Dry Storage Option: If needed, peonies can be held dry in sleeves in refrigeration, then rehydrated before use.
  • Avoid Ethylene Gas: Keep away from ripening fruit/vegetables.

4. Daily Maintenance

  • Refresh water daily to keep bacteria low.
  • Recut stems every 24 hours for maximum hydration.
  • Remove wilted petals to maintain freshness.

5. Design & Event Tips

  • Timing: Red peonies open quickly in warm rooms. Design 1–2 days before the event for ideal bloom stage.
  • To Open Faster: Place in warmer water/room with recut stems.
  • To Slow Down: Keep in cooler temperatures and low light.
  • Mix Stages: Use tight buds + open blooms for texture and to extend vase life.

6. Vase Life Expectation

  • Properly conditioned, red peonies last 5–7 days in June’s high season.
  • Schedule arrivals a few days before event day to control opening stage.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
