Designing Tips

Designing Tips for Green Spider Mums – from Whole Blossoms

Green spider mums (a variety of Chrysanthemum morifolium) are known for their unique spiky petals and bright chartreuse color. Their dramatic texture and color make them a standout in both contemporary and natural floral designs.

  • Bold Texture & Shape: Use green spider mums to add spiky, dynamic form to arrangements. Their long, curling petals contrast beautifully with softer flowers like roses, peonies, and lisianthus.
  • Color Contrast: Pair with whites, purples, or deep burgundies for a striking visual palette. They also look stunning against tropical greens and succulents.
  • Modern Elegance: Ideal for structured, modern centerpieces or tall arrangements. Their symmetry and texture offer a clean, high-impact look.
  • Focal or Accent: Use as a bold focal flower in minimalist bouquets, or as a striking secondary bloom in larger installations and standing sprays.
  • Versatile Use: Perfect for wedding centerpieces, event arches, sympathy arrangements, or holiday décor. Also works well in foam-based designs and long-lasting displays.
  • Complementary Florals: Combine with ornamental kale, hypericum berries, orchids, or tulips to create an upscale, designer look with rich color and depth.

Care & Handling

Care & Handling for Green Spider Mums – from Whole Blossoms

To ensure maximum freshness and longevity, follow these detailed care instructions:

Upon Arrival:

  • Unpack Immediately: Remove flowers from the box carefully and allow them to breathe. Gently loosen bunches to prevent compression damage.
  • Re-cut Stems: Trim 1–2 inches from the bottom of each stem at a 45° angle under clean, running water to promote hydration.

Hydration:

  • Place in Clean Water: Fill sanitized buckets or vases with room-temperature water and add floral preservative.
  • Hydrate for 4–6 Hours: Allow blooms to drink in a cool, shaded area before arranging. Full hydration ensures maximum bloom and strength.

Storage:

  • Cool Storage Preferred: Keep flowers at 36–46°F in a well-ventilated cooler or refrigerator. Avoid freezing conditions or proximity to fans or heat vents.
  • Change Water Every 2–3 Days: Recut stems and replace with fresh water to prevent bacterial buildup and maximize vase life.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Store arrangements away from direct sunlight, drafts, and ripening fruit (ethylene gas shortens vase life).
  • Provide Air Circulation: Ensure that air flows around the flowers to prevent mold or mildew, especially in dense arrangements or box storage.
  • Keep Tools Clean: Always use sanitized cutting tools and containers to prevent stem blockage and water contamination.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
