Care & Handling: Fresh Roses for the Holiday Season

Fresh roses require proper hydration and temperature control—especially during the winter holiday season, when shipping conditions and indoor heating can affect the flowers. Follow these steps to ensure your roses open beautifully and last as long as possible.

1. Unpack Immediately & Inspect the Roses

  • Carefully remove your roses from the box as soon as they arrive.
  • Expect temporary travel stress such as slightly droopy heads or wrinkled petals—this is normal for roses shipped in winter.
  • Check for any darkened outer petals (“guard petals”), which protect the bloom during transport.

2. Hydrate the Roses Right Away

Roses are thirsty—proper hydration is essential.

  1. Fill clean buckets with lukewarm water (never cold during winter).
  2. Add commercial floral food to promote water uptake.
  3. Remove plastic sleeves only after the roses have hydrated 4–6 hours.
  4. Recut each stem at a 45° angle under water to prevent air bubbles.
  5. Immediately place stems into the prepared buckets.

3. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Holiday shipments often travel through cold regions. To protect your roses:

  • Never leave boxes outside, in a garage, or in a cold vehicle.
  • Keep roses in a cool room (55–65°F), away from heaters or drafts.
  • Do not store next to fruits—ethylene gas will shorten vase life.

4. Allow Roses Time to Open

Fresh roses may arrive tight. To help them open beautifully:

  • Hydrate them for at least 8–12 hours before designing.
  • Keep them in a cool but not cold environment.
  • Remove several guard petals to reveal brighter, cleaner blooms.
  • For events, condition roses 2–3 days before for the best bloom size.

5. Refresh Water Daily

Winter heating dries stems faster—daily care is essential.

  • Change water every 24 hours.
  • Recut stems ½ inch each day to maximize hydration.
  • Clean buckets and tools to prevent bacteria buildup.

6. Event & Holiday Design Tips

  • Mix roses with evergreens, pine cones, eucalyptus, or holiday accents for festive arrangements.
  • For weddings and corporate events, hydrate roses deeply before arranging—they last longer in bouquets and centerpieces.
  • Keep finished designs in a cool, stable environment until the event.

Tips for ordering
  • We recommend that most flowers be scheduled to be delivered 2-3 days prior to an event. All flowers are harvested just prior to delivery.
  • Delicate flowers such as Lily of the Valley, Gardenias, and Stephanotis are best when delivered 1-2 days before the event.
  • Iris have a short vase life so the delivery should be scheduled 2 days prior to your event.
  • Lotus have a short vase life so they need to be ordered 1-2 days prior to events.
  • Peonies and Ranunculus may take longer to open during cold months. Schedule delivery of these flowers 3-4 days prior to your event.
  • Alstroemeria, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, Stars of Bethlehem, Sunflowers, and Lilies may require at least 3 days for blooming. Consider scheduling delivery of these flowers 3-4 days before your event.
  • Blooming branches for Jan and Feb deliveries should be scheduled for delivery at least 7 - 10 days before your event to permit adequate blooming. Expect blooming in 10 days with cold weather. For March and later, a 4-5 day lead time before your wedding or event is suggested for proper blooming.
  • Pumpkin branches schedule delivery 2 to 3 days prior to your event.
  • For Manzanita branches, if you would like the farm to remove the leaves, this needs to be requested in advance.
If you are unsure what day to select, pick the best available date you can, we suggest 3 days prior to the event. OR you can contact our flower care experts by chat or email to help you decide which date is best for you.
